Why Your Shop Floor Needs a Kiosk (Not a Whiteboard)
There's a ritual in fabrication shops that's survived decades of technological change: the morning huddle around the whiteboard. The production manager walks the board, assigns jobs, updates statuses in dry-erase marker, and everyone nods. By 10:30 AM, three things have changed, the board is out of date, and nobody's updated it because everyone's hands are full — literally.
The whiteboard isn't the problem. It's the symptom of a deeper issue: the shop floor and the front office are running on two separate versions of reality. The fix isn't a better whiteboard. It's a kiosk.
What We Mean by "Kiosk"
Not a tablet. Not an iPad mounted to the wall with a case from Amazon. Start with the one thing they care about: clocking into a job so they get paid for it. Once they're in the habit of using the kiosk for time tracking, layering on status updates and issue flagging is easy.
- Put it where people already go. Don't mount it in the office. Don't mount it in a dark corner. Put it next to the coffee machine, the break area, or the tool crib — places with foot traffic. The kiosk isn't a destination. It's something you pass on the way to somewhere else.
- Keep the interface dead simple. If it takes more than two taps to complete the most common action (clock into a job, mark an operation complete), the interface is too complex. Big buttons. High contrast. Glove-friendly touch targets. This isn't a desktop app — it's an appliance.
The whiteboard served its purpose for a generation. But in a shop that's trying to quote faster, schedule tighter, and track costs accurately, it's a gap in the data pipeline.
